Wed 11/2 Clumsy Lovers @ Half Door in Hartford, CT

I absolutely LOVE this band out of Vancouver: The Clumsy Lovers. I even have a t-shirt. These people are no joke.

The first time I saw them, I was out with my friend Tom and my cousin Suzy. We just stumbled into Half Door on a spontaneous Friday night out for a fine draft. We had no clue if there was a band and we were blessed by the music gods: Clumsy Lovers were in da house. The five member band have a banjo player who was #1 in Canada as a teenager and the lady plays one of the meanest fiddles around. The lead singer is pretty darn cute.

The first song, we were dancing. By the third, we had gotten the tambourine. By song #7 we were on stage with the band. It was awesome. Their music is a fusion of folk, rockabilly, blues, ska, country and je ne sais quoi. The only thing you know is that it translates directly to your feet as...DANCE, mofo!

I'm very excited that they are coming to Hartford again and hope you will join me tomorrow at Half Door!

Wednesdays - Salsa Dancing @ Botega's, New Haven CT

Tonight I'm taking off my lindy hopping shoes and putting on my fire red salsa dress and pumps! Ay Caramba!

Yes, I'm going to set the dance floor en fuego (or at least try) for the first time at Botega's in New Haven, CT. I'm taking along my handy-dandy friend Maggie (swing AND salsa dancer) and going to see what this place and the crowd are all about.

I'll write back tomorrow to let you know how it went!

***********UPDATE************

Botega's was rocking. I loved it! I danced the whole night. There was three floors: basement was house, first floor was Salsa and top floor was balcony/seating area. We saw a belly dancer and capajara dancers during intermissions. It was amazing.

Thursdays - Bread 'N' Buttah Jam @ Providence Tango Studio

This event deserves a post on our blog. CT folk have to drive about an hour or so to make the Thursday night Bread N Buttah...and it is worth it every time. That's why we keep going back!

The Providence crowd are some of the friendliest and liveliest dancers around. You won't be sitting around waiting to dance much here. Two of my fave hepkittens, Mary Farnsworth and the C-doll, Chris Marco can usually be found hoofing around the dance floor.

So, yeah, head down to the Providence Tango Studio for a little bit of bread n buttah!

Here is the official info:

Bread and Butter Jam
As always the practice session (affectionately known as the Bread & Butter Jam) follows the Thursday lesson and goes from 8:15 - 11:30 pm. At 9:30 there is a free intermediate mini-class (Swing Snippet). The Bread & Butter Jam is free for those who took the lesson or $5 ($2 for students/low income) if you're interested in just attending the Bread & Butter Jam.

Fridays - Swing Review/Practice Parties - No. Haven CT

Hi Hep Cats & Kittens-

I wanted to fill you in on the Friday Night Swing Review and Practice Parties! at NEAT (New England Actors Theater), 28 Washington Ave, North Haven. Let me start off by saying it was AWESOME!

First, the drive was not obnoxiously long. The practice starts at 8:30 pm, so highway traffic is usually quite a bit lighter at that time. It took me about 30-40 minutes from Manchester. Not too shabby. It was right off I-91.

I met up with Maggie (aka Peas), a good friend from back in my APO days, and her friend Luigi. We had plans to go see a U2 Cover band play at Toad's later on so we weren't going to stick around the whole night. I was hoping that I might be able to get a break on the admission but no dice. My friend Joanna A. was at the door (she co-teaches with the lovely Noelle in New Haven on Wednesday nights). She said it was a flat $10 bucks no matter what.

Well, I definately got my money's worth. It was like getting a private lesson for $10! There were so many advanced dancers and teachers that it was easy to pair up for just one on one or small group instruction. I got four different "teachers" and learned a little bit of the swivel (finally!!) and some of the nuances of the sugar push/compression moves. You get to determine what you want to work on. Every level of beginner and intermediate dancer was there.

Every "teacher" was relaxed, super friendly and very patient. They would repeat the moves over and over. They took the time to break things down and explain it. If one teacher didn't know something, they pulled another one over who did know. If you want to dance with any of the people who "wow" everyone at Vinnie's but are too shy/intimidated to ask them to dance, this is your chance! And not only that, they share their secrets, too.

In all, there was maybe 30-40 people who showed up. The room was kind of small, but since it's a pretty intimate and relaxed practice session, that didn't bother me too much. They have a nice bathroom. I definately think they need to air condition that room better. It got really hot, really fast. But that is pretty typical of most swing dance events. This is definately a techwick event.

So, on a scale of 1 to 10, I would have to give this a 9.0. It was definately a good time and well worth the gas and price of admission. You will definately see me there again.

Here is more info:

8:30 - 10:00 PM - experienced dancers from the local community will be available to answer questions, offer suggestions and dance with beginners!

10:00 - 11:30 PM - use what you've learned, dancing to DJ swing tunes!

The classes are September 16, 30, Oct 7, 21, Nov 4, 18.

You can find more info at http://ctswing.org

Welcome to the Full Crew Blog!

Well, I've got the bottle of champagne ready to christen this new blog ship...Vinnie's Full Crew! This is a space where I hope that the coolest swing, lindy and latin dancers will come and post events, share thoughts, and just have a good ole time.

I want to give a nod to Mary Farnsworth. If it wasn't for her energy and charisma as a swing and lindy hop teacher, the Full Crew would have never gotten bit by the swing bug!

And I want to finish off my giving a nod to the coolest CT hep cats and kittens I know: Owen, Amy, Kohar and Dan. You guys rock!
